  • Effective pedagogical methods to create experimental skills

Our mission

Quantum theory arose from attempts to understand certain paradoxical features of nature. Ideas such as superposition, entanglement, and the quantum character of measurement were introduced in order to give a consistent description of physical phenomena at the microscopic scale. What began as a theoretical framework has now become the basis for a new class of technologies in computation, communication, sensing, and photonics. The development of these technologies requires not only an understanding of the mathematical structure of quantum mechanics, but also the ability to realise its principles in physical systems.

For this reason, education in quantum information science should not remain entirely abstract. The student must learn how the formalism of the theory is connected with the behaviour of real experimental arrangements. Optical interferometers, demonstrations of quantum measurement provide particularly clear illustrations of the theory at work. When a learner can assemble such systems and observe their operation, the mathematical relations of quantum mechanics acquire a direct physical meaning.

The construction of pedagogical experimental systems therefore serves an important purpose. It reduces the separation between theoretical study and practical implementation. Students who engage with such systems acquire not only familiarity with the principles of the theory, but also the experimental judgement required to apply them. This form of training is of considerable importance for the development of quantum technologies.

In this way it becomes possible to connect the study of quantum mechanics with its technological applications. The aim is to prepare individuals capable of translating the conceptual structure of the theory into functioning physical devices. The progress of quantum information science will depend upon such a combination of clear theoretical understanding and careful experiment, an additional aim is that these systems be developed and manufactured locally, so that the essential instruments of quantum education may arise from indigenous scientific and technological capability rather than dependence on external sources.

Quantum information science is essentially turning paradoxes into products.”
